At SQM, Sustainability is one of our corporate values. We are engaged in several alliances and certifications which demonstrate our commitment to comply with ESG standards.
Dow Jones Sustainability Index
In 2023 SQM was accepted in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index World and Emerging Markets indices. The Dow Jones Index reflects our efforts to promote sustainability through the annual publication of our Sustainability Report, prepared under the principles of the Global Reporting Initiative and verified externally.
Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA)
In September 2023, our Salar de Atacama lithium mining operations achieved IRMA 75, being the only lithium company to achieve this level worldwide. IRMA is an international standard that measures the social and environmental performance in mining sites worldwide, which due to its rigor is consulted by a wide range of interest groups.
CARBON DISCLOSURE PROJECT (CDP)
In 2023, we were assessed in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) where we received a B-category climate change rating, which is above the global average (C category) and in line with the global chemical industry average (B-category). We also completed the CDP assessment for water in which we achieved a B- category, which is higher than the global average and the chemical industry average (category C).
Responsible Care
A voluntary certification and commitment by chemical companies to perfect the production, handling, distribution, use, and disposal processes for their products. The companies aim toward the highest health and safety standards for their employees and surrounding communities while protecting the environment, company, and community assets.
ISO 14001
Companies use this Environmental Management System Standard to demonstrate responsibility and commitment to protecting the environment by managing environmental risks that could arise in their business operations.
ISO 50001
Energy management. This standard aims to help organizations continually reduce their energy use. In 2023 We obtained ISO 50001 certification for our Nueva Victoria, Coya Sur sites. The Salar de Atacama site and our Lithium Chemical Plant are implementing standards to obtain this certification
ISO/TC 333 Lithium
In 2020 we joined the ISO / TC 333 Lithium International Committee with the mission of contributing - with all our experience acquired in more than 20 years producing lithium compounds - in the study of those technical regulations necessary to expand its value chain.
ECOPORTS
In 2023, our Port in Tocopilla was certified by EcoPorts, a leading environmental initiative for the European port sector The EcoPorts certification is the most important environmental initiative in the European port sector and as such offers a series of tools for environmental management based on the EcoPorts Port Environmental Review System (PERS) guidelines, global and voluntary standards with requirements that go beyond the normative. In 2023, the Port of Tocopilla was certified by EcoPorts, a leading environmental initiative for the European port sector.
International Fertilizer Association (IFA)
The partnership between SQM Lithium and the International Fertilizer Association (IFA) is based on a collaboration to promote sustainable agricultural practices around the world. At SQM Lithium we are a leading company in the production of plant nutrients, while the IFA is a global organization that represents the fertilizer industry.
GLOBAL BATTERY ALLIANCE
Global Battery Alliance aims to create a sustainable lithium battery value chain through 10 guiding principles. We are the only lithium producer participating in this international alliance.
ECOVADIS
Ecovadis is a sustainability rating provider that uses a methodology based on international standards, including the United Nations Global Compact Global Reporting Initiative and ISO 26000.
ISO 9001
Thanks to hard work carried out since 2018, we obtained certification of the lithium production and marketing processes under the ISO 9001:2015 standard. In 2019 we renewed the certification for 3 years for Lithium Carbonate and Lithium Hydroxide in their industrial, technical and battery grades.
